:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Alexis -- Stunning. : Who is responsible for this gorgeous design?? I can't tell you how gorgeous this book is in person. My father has a great love for all things Les Mis and when he saw my copy he fell in love. He begged me to give it to him but I love it to much! I just received a second copy that is his Christmas gift this year :) Les Mis is beautiful book anyways, this cover gives it the artwork it deserves. I read the entire book with this copy. I loved the placement, feel, and look of every page. 5 stars isn't enough! This is a truly stunning copy of this beautiful literary work. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2016 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from JGar -- An Exceptional Work of Art : The Centaur Classics Edition of Les Miserables is unabridged and extremely well-formatted, though there are a handful of typos throughout. The translation is by Isabel Hapgood. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2016 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from keagman -- Great book but confusing editions; Amazon needs to clarify : Great book but I honestly can't tell if I am reading the abridged or unabridged version. The Amazon purchase info. leaves this information out for some reason and the reviews at the bottom of the Amazon page on my edition refer to different translations. I bought the Kindle version, Hapgood translation. I would have to compare it with an original unabridged edition to know for sure. I am 60% through the book and it would seem to be unabridged as it has all the seemingly unrelated information on Waterloo, convents, etc., and yet the pagination in the text indicates only around 718 pages or so. I understand the original has around 1100 pages. And yet the Kindle edition has 4 Kindle pages to one "real" page. So very confusing. Can anyone shed any light on this?? - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Er Jwee Chiek 余瑞傑 -- Who was the most wretched of them all? : I am a sentimental soul. And I have never cried more buckets of tears for any book or any film until Les Miserables. My two favourite Russian authors Tolstoy and Dostoevsky gave it the highest praise possible. Tolstoy called it the greatest novel ever. Dostoevsky hailed Victor Hugo as the greatest author of the 19th century. Perhaps because all three great authors of the 19th century had the common trait of God loving/fearing and the theme of love and redemption prominently coursed through their great works of literature. Victor Hugo did it most successfully with his web of characters and the incredibly uplifting story line. Uplifting only after taking us to the depths of despair, despondency and wretchedness before providence came to the rescue. A wonderful reminder for all readers too that our lives are in the hands of God and it is providence that steer our lives, with hardship and also with triumphs. At which ever state in our lives we are in, we need to embrace life bravely during hardships and yet still be generous to others like the 10 year old Gavroche. A little street urchin with a heart of gold. Sharing and helping others who had less he did himself which was next to nothing. It was incredibly moving that after a chance meeting, Gavroche shared his shabby, crude shelter in a giant elephant statue, monument to Napoleon, with two younger homeless kid younger than himself. Unbeknown to Gavroche, the two young toddlers were actually his long lost brothers he had never met because their cruel parents gave away the two younger ones at an early stage. Providence bringing the three siblings together because of a twist of fate cannot be more heartwarming to read and weep a little of the beauty of humanity. A beautiful and kinder our society we can certainly have if there were more angelic souls like Gavroche, Bishop of Digne, and Valjean with their self sacrificial heart of gold and were so willing to bring a slice of heaven to all who led wretched lives crossing their paths. Indeed this epic tale of goodness must inspire readers greatly to no ends if readers would embrace the story and gaining a new perspective on life, a selfless aspect of service unto others that must take priority over our own selfish needs, bringing ultimately sublimity into our earthly existence. One of contentment, importance of generosity and capacity to smile in the midst of adversity. When we create paradise on earth for others, we create a paradise for ourselves too. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Christine Lundstrom -- Les Miserables - read the book, don't bother with the musical : The Kindle edition was not as enjoyable as the translation by Lee Fahnestock, which is available in book form. The Kindle version was an older translation that was very stilted and clumsy. I recommend Fahnestock, for a very readable version with a French flair. - 1.0 out of 5 stars from E. Grey -- Wrong Translation! : The one star review is not for this sublime book but for Amazon's inability to get its different versions properly synched. This was supposed to be the Fahnestock & McAfee version but was the Hapgood translation (available for free from Project Gutenberg). Very disappointing and I do wish Amazon would get their search engines sorted out so that one could search with more precision for specific editions and read reviews that relate to those editions. They're a billion dollar company; it should not be beyond their ability to sort out their search engine. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 11, 2018 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Absolutely beautiful ! : I usually don’t review anything, but when this book arrived , I thought it was so beautiful ,I must write one! Not only , the inside cover is a beautiful painting -like drawing , but the pages are gold trimmed and the whole book looks like one piece of a very expensive collection .It is going to make a fantastic gift to a book lover ! For this price , it is a bargain. Highly recommended . ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 21, 2018 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Tamlin -- Sorrow and Joy : Just finished reading this with the help of the audio version (same translation). This is up there as one of the greatest novels, a vast panorama of post Napoleonic France, a love story and the story of one man's struggle for redemption. Don't listen to those who say that it could have been shorter, that there is too much "digression". The language is extraordinary, as rich and powerful as any work of fiction and the translation is excellent. This modestly priced edition is cased in a sturdy rubber cover as befits the weight of its contents. Expect to shed tears of sorrow and joy. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 27, 2017 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Polkadot Bookworm :) -- Worth a read ... do not give up : I read this last year and it took me a while to get through. As many have mentioned, a VERY lengthy book with some (possibly) unnecessary discriptions but I actuallly loved this book (if it was not for the length which almost destroyed me, I would have given 5 stars!) It really is worth the read, and I do feel that the length of the story makes you empathise with the journey of Jean Valjean and his struggles. Its a moving story which takes you through the lives of many that interwine and grow together. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 9, 2015 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Michelle -- Fabulous edition (Canterbury classics) : This edition of Les Miserables is stunning, you won’t regret buying. The only thing you may be put off by is the sheer size, please don’t be, the book contains the full story, split into five volumes. The cover pages contain the most beautiful detailed picture of the struggles within the setting of the revolution. The edges of the pages are sprayed gold and the text is of a nice size. The width of the spine measures sixty three millimetres if you’re wondering if you have enough space to show off this beauty on your bookcase. I now have the ambition to obtain other Canterbury classic books as I’m extremely happy with the quality. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 22, 2021 )
